Overview
The Budget vs Actual report is an interactive visualization of your budget comparison data. Built in Tableau or Power BI, this report helps answer a sequence of questions such as:
- In which expense accounts did we exceed the budget?
- Which properties contributed to the variances?
- Which transactions account for most of the variance?
Purpose
To provide a visual, interactive way to identify and explain budget variances.
How to Use
Identify the large variances. Select a specific account and view the income / expense transactions in it. Filter by property to see which properties contributed the most to the variance.Drill-down to the unit level is also possible if transactions are being recorded by unit.

“How did we do against budget?” is a questions that come up every month-end.
However, when you are setting up budgets for each property, for as many as 10 to 20 income and expense accounts, that response to that question can be quite long-winded.
A picture can tell the story much better.
This interactive report is a great way to see where the variances are.
Look at one or more property at a time.
Select the accounts you want to focus on.
Drill down to properties and even units to see where the money got spent.
